Question 3
Grant is being pulled in two different directions. He tries to please everyone when deep down inside he knows he is not happy. Grant wants nothing more than to just leave his home and get away. He does not do this because of his Aunt, Tante Lou, and his girlfriend, Vivian.
Tante Lou and Miss Emma are forcing Grant to teach Jefferson. They want Grant to transform Jefferson into a man. Grant thinks there is no way he could do this, but out of respect for Miss Emma and Tante Lou he tries. Vivian also plays a big part in why Grant goes down to the jail and sees Jefferson. He isn't doing any of this for himself, but instead for them.
Grant must put his personal desires and ambitions on hold for them. Personally Grant wants to leave Bayonne and find greater things. He believes that he can never get anything accomplished as long as he stays in Bayonne. Tante Lou doesn't ever want Grant to leave and she does a lot to make him stay.
